Pass the Collage
GRADE LEVEL – 9th through 12th grade
ANTICIPATED TIME NEEDED FOR THE ENTIRE LESSON
1-class periods
STATE STANDARDS
· Each student will investigate how to work together when creating a collaborative art piece.
· Students will be able to identify how an abstract artwork can be constructed in a collaborative environment.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF LESSON
Students will be creating a narrative by creating a collage using images from a magazine. The students will be encourage discovering ways to layer the different cutouts, create patterns and incorporate a variety of shapes. They will use the magazine to cut out random images. Each student will have an 8x11 black paper. Each student will then glue one of their images down to the paper then pass it to the student to their right. This will continue until an image or form begins to form. The images will be transformed in order to create unity within the artwork.

DAY – 1
- Have dry erase board prepped with info needed
- Have materials already distributed at students work areas
- Each student will cut out images or shape from multiple magazines
- Pass the paper and the next student to their right, the nest student will glue an image on the paper
- Usually they start to take on form and become something or end up really abstract which makes a good beginning for learning about that.
- Students could also be given a theme fro this fun assignment.
- Clean up and set up time at the end of the lesson
- Ask questions of students to check for understanding
