TITLE OF LESSON
Design with Contour Line
GRADE LEVEL - 6th grade
ANTICIPATED TIME NEEDED FOR THE ENTIRE LESSON
1-2 class periods
STATE STANDARDS
DESIGN/CRITICAL THINKING CONNECTION
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF LESSON
Students will use the element of Line to create a design/ art piece. The design/art work will consist of students using a marker on white paper and the use of lines to make a complex and interesting design/art work. Begin the drawing by creating a curvy line starting at one edge of the paper and ending at another. Put eight dots on the line, use these dots to guide the contour line. Do not intersect lines. Help students to imagine that the line is a string and they are wrapping the string around a 3-dimensional object. Use alternating complementary colors to complete the design. Students will also use their Interactive Student Notebook (ISN) to list input and output for the vocabulary words used in this lesson.
SCOPE AND SEQUENCE (ORDERED FLOW OF LESSON)
DAY – 1
ASSESSMENT
Success will be assessed via critique process of finished design/artwork. They will have a high quality design/art work that is ready to be mounted if selected for exhibition, students will have tape off edges, fully rendered and signed. The student will demonstrate understanding and use of cross-contour lines to create the illusion of form, they will use a method of assessing their understanding with thumbs up 1-10 method.
VOCABULARY (ESSENTIAL TERMS FOR THE LESSON)
MATERIALS (WHAT IS NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE LESSON)
For Gifted:
1. Explore concepts in depth and encourage independent
study
2. Encourage creative expression and thinking by allowing students to choose how to approach a problem or assignment
3. Ask students’ higher level questions that require students
to look into causes, experiences, and facts to draw a
conclusion or make connections to other areas of learning.
4. Encourage the students to make transformations- use a
common task or item in a different way
For IEP students:
1. Extended Time
2. Alternative Materials
3. Modified Assignments (shorter, easier)
4. Visual Aids
For ESL:
1. Extended Time
2. Alternative Materials
3. Modified Assignments (shorter, easier)
4. Interpreting, Transliterating
